Kneel While You Work To Reduce Your Sitting Time
Mark Green
I’m sure you have heard many times and from many sources how bad prolonged sitting is for your body. There have been studies done which show that exercising for 1 hour in the morning followed by 8 hours sitting at work, is barely better for your cardio vascular health than not exercising at all.
Our bodies were designed to move at a low level of intensity all day. Like the hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Now I realise it is not realistic/necessary to be walking 20km every day to find your next place to sleep, but you can make a few lifestyle changes to help move a little bit closer to the “move all day” concept. Read this article to find out more.
One easy change to make, is to spend some of your working time kneeling on your foam roller rather than sitting in a chair. Kneeling on your foam roller can help to stretch your hip flexors, it reduces the stress and tension through your lower back, and it can help to prevent your glutes from becoming lazy.
You shouldn’t try to kneel all day, but you might for example spend 5 minutes on one knee, and then 5 minutes on the other, then go back to sitting for 20 minutes. If you were to keep alternating like this during the whole working day it would reduce your sitting time by about 2 1/2 hours per day, which is 12 1/2 hours per week or 600 hours in a year. That is a big number, so has the potential to make a big difference to your body.
Dust off your foam roller and give it a go. It might take a few weeks to get used to it, so aim to start with an amount that you find comfortable, and gradually increase it from there.
